Literacy Lessons Project
The Arts for Learning Literacy Lessons is a set of five instructional units that integrate a specific literacy skill with an art form, using cutting-edge theory on how children learn to dramatically impact literacy scores. Twenty-four teachers in Hillsboro recently were trained by Young Audiences to bring two of these units - Words in Motion and Graphic Story Adventures - into their grades 3-5 classrooms. Four of the classes are taking part in a national study of the effect of the lessons on student achievement. The Literacy Lessons were developed by National Young Audiences and a design team from the University of Washington.

What is Run For the Arts?

Since 1977, Run For The Arts has helped schools raise more than $10.5 million for arts in education.

Run For The Arts is an opportunity for schools to raise the funds that make it possible to bring artists into their classrooms, pay for field trips to see performances and exhibitions and purchase art supplies. It is an annual jogathon conducted by individual schools throughout Oregon & SW Washington and coordinated by Young Audiences. Students secure pledges for laps run, earn points, win prizes and raise funds to ensure the arts are present in their school.

In the 2008-2009 school year, over 22,000 students in 93 schools from 16 different school districts in 7 counties participated in this project, raising over $675,000 -- a lion's share of arts programming for the classrooms of our neighborhoods. For more details click here.
