Greta Pedersen Receives National "Artist of the Year" Award

Greta Pedersen, award-winning musician, songwriter, educator, peer-mentoring coach and Young Audiences of Oregon & SW Washington teaching artist, received the National Young Audiences Arts for Learning “Artist of the Year Award” at the organization’s annual conference, held recently in New Orleans. The Young Audiences Artist of the Year demonstrates excellence in an art form, balancing work as both an educator and a professional. He or she must be passionate about what and how children learn and find ways to share best practices with peers in the field. Pedersen was chosen from among thousands of artists across the country. Pedersen joined the roster of Young Audiences of Oregon & SW Washington seven years ago and has provided nearly 100 performance/demonstrations, workshops and residencies to local schoolchildren. She participates as coach in Young Audience’s Coaching Cadre Peer Mentoring Program and has shared her artistic expertise with the national network. Pedersen studied music in Vienna, Austria, before receiving a B.A. in Music from Stanford University and a California Music Teaching Credential through San Jose State University. She is currently a Pacific Northwest regional representative for the Children's Music Network and appears nationally in concerts and on television and radio. Her music is licensed to numerous video soundtracks and publishing projects, including Scholastic's Circle Time series. She has two Magical Music Express recordings. Friendship Stew won an Award of Excellence from the Film Advisory Board and Music Is Magic received a 2004 Classic Recording designation from the Children's Music Web Awards. “We are proud to have Greta Pedersen on our artist roster,” says Gail Hayes Davis, Executive Director of Young Audiences of Oregon & SW Washington. “Her passion for helping enhance children’s learning through the arts, specifically through music, drives her personal, professional and educational work, and we all reap the benefits of her best practices.” The Young Audiences Arts for Learning network includes 30 affiliates throughout the United States that provide arts-integrated performance-demonstrations, workshops and residency programs in all the arts disciplines: music, dance, visual arts, theater and the literary arts. Young Audiences of Oregon & SW Washington has been offering educational arts programming to the Portland/Vancouver region since 1958 in support of its mission: to enhance children’s learning with creative resources from the arts community.
