Students in the Live SET program

Students in the Live SET program work with sound engineer Jason Powers to run cables and mic a drum kit.

Following weeks of learning to set up mics, run cables, and work a mixing board like a seasoned pro, nine Portland teens will show off their live sound engineering skills in a free afternoon concert on Sunday, May 3 featuring rising St. Johns rap crew The Resistance, synth-pop outfit Fringe Class, and local luminary Edna Vazquez. This concert is the culmination and public showcase of five weeks of training as part of Young Audiences’ new Live Sound Engineering for Teens (Live SET) program.

“Sound engineering brings together music and science in an exciting real-world setting,” explains Young Audiences’ Executive Director Cary Clarke. “The musical talent coming together on stage at this all-star concert is impressive on its own. The fact that the real stars of this show are off stage—the amazing local high school students who will be running the sound system from start to finish—will make it an unforgettable community celebration that no one should miss.”

Live SET offers Portland-area youth of high school age real-world, practical training in the art and science of live sound engineering. The program is free for students and taught by leading Portland engineers Jason Powers and Nalin Silva at the world-renowned Mississippi Studios concert venue. Live SET is supported in part by grants from the Mentor Graphics Foundation, and the Oregon Arts Commission, in partnership with the Oregon Cultural Trust, as well as generous community support from neighboring businesses Laughing Planet, Mississippi Pizza, Por Que No Taqueria, and Optik PDX.

The Resistance
The most buzzed-about rap outfit in Portland right now, Mic Capes, Glenn Waco, and Rasheed Jamal want you to know what St. Johns sounds like to them. Their conscious lyrics (and lyricism) flow over a gritty, sample-based production to tell stories of where they are and where they’re going.

Fringe Class
Gold’s fierce vocals set sail on the synth and rhythm stylings of Patrick Berry, Sam Gerendasy, and Brad Russell to form the 1980s school dance soundtrack of your dreams. Don’t ask, just move your body around and enjoy.

Edna Vazquez
After leaving her native Mexico for the United States at 17, Edna Vazquez has made her mark on audiences with her velvet voice, original compositions that pay homage to her Latin American influences, and her own arrangements of traditional songs. And yes, she is known to whistle.
